Susan Curtis Brings Home the EWGA Championship Finals Trophy
EWGA Cleveland member, Susan Curtis, brought home a 1st Place Low Net win in the Fourth Flight at the EWGA Championship Finals at the Lansdowne Golf Club in Leesburg, Va on October 15, 2016! This was Susan's fourth time competing in the Finals, and first win for her. Her win allows her automatic entry into the 2017 Finals. The course was a Robert Trent Jones course, beautiful and challenging. Susan commented that the front nine "lured you into complacency and then the back nine was one hole after another of challenging holes" and course management was a must. In addition, the Saturday fog, and course difficulty cause long delays.
Denise Andres and Gloria Merritt also competed and finished with very respectable scores. Gloria deserves an endurance award for an 8 hour round! Wendy Shick had qualified at the Semi-Finals to advance but was unable to because of a work committment. Great job to all!

Cleveland Dominates Chapter Championship Semi-Finals 2016
The Quail Hollow-Devlin course was the host of the Upper Mideast District Championship on Saturday, August 27. Home cooking and being surrounded by familiar faces (with all the volunteers) did the trick as Cleveland dominated the 6 other chapters winners from Canada, Detroit and Ft. Wayne. The weather was another one of those hot-humid days as we have experienced on multiple occasions this year.
For the first time (based on Wendy’s recollection) Cleveland chapter qualified four golfers (Denise Andres, Susan Curtis, Gloria Merritt and Wendy Shick) to the EWGA Championship Finals. First gross and first net winners are eligible to travel to the Landsdowne Resort and Spa in Leesburg, VA on October 14-15.
Denise Andres and Gloria Merritt both shot the “best” rounds of the day finishing with 66 nets on the par 71 course. Those are two awesome rounds of golf under the conditions of the play.
The following are the placements by flight:
Championship flight – Wendy Shick 1st net – 68, Clare Labaj 3rd net – 77
1st flight – Leigh Murray 2nd net – 70
3rd flight – Gloria Merritt 1st gross – 98, Debbie Kandel 2nd gross – 99. Debbie actually played in place of Kim Behm who was forced to withdraw Friday because of an injury..
4th flight – Denise Andres 1st gross – 103, Susan Curtis 1st net - 75
Scramble team – 2nd place – 69 for Kim Bailey, Debbie Brenner, Nancy Cetina and Lori Maxwell.
Other golfers who participated included Lisa Bizjak, Cindy Darwal and Eileen McCarthy.
Another big winner of the day was Donna Byrnes winning the 50-50 pot – over $400 !!
A district event takes a lot of work from many volunteers. Debbie McCreery as the Chief Volunteer Coordinate and Susan Curtis was the Asst. Chief. Others that volunteered on either Friday or Saturday or both included: Cindy Darwal, Leigh Murray, Monica Wilson, Marilyn Weinke, Dina Stier, Laurie Schroeder, Donna Byrnes, Ann and Tom Shamess, Jane and George Spellacy, Gwen Virag, Pat Blackmon, Elsa Arriola, Kate Vezdos, Diane Ward and Sharon Sammon.
The Cleveland also put together one of the best Participant Gift Bags in quite a few years. Donations were obtained by/from Cindy Darwal (Giant Eagle and Winking Lizard), Karla Maschmeier, Sharon Sammon (Sherwin Williams), Deb Solyan (AFLAC) and WTF Golf by Lisa Bizjak, Ann Shamess and Andi Shimek.
Winners Advance to Quail Hollow Sectional
Saturday was a scorching day to be on the golf course as 36 golfers participated in the Chapter Championship at Ellsworth Meadows Golf Club. The rains over the two days leading up to Saturday had the course wet in a few spots, but things dried out in the afternoon as temperatures reached 92. Leigh Murray and Gloria Merritt posted the best rounds of the day (when comparing net scores) as both has 67 net. Five scramble teams were vying for the one spot in the Scramble competition, so that part of the competition was hotly contested. Lots of cold drinks and fun was had by all at the 19th hole. The first place gross, first place net winners and first place scramble team will advance to the Sectional Tournament at Quail Hollow – Devlin course on August 27. With our chapter hosting the event, we are expecting to advance a few players on to the Nationals that will be held in Virginia in September. If you are interested in volunteering to work on August 26 or 27, contact Debbie McCreery at email@example.com. You will be given a tee shirt and $10 towards food purchase.
