Letter from the President

Dear EWGA Members,

We had a great 2016 season!

I would like to congratulate Susan Curtis and our Hot in Cleveland match play team consisting of Cleveland members Leigh Murray, Andy Shimek, Maria Kamenos, Donna Schreiber, Lisa Bizjak, Terry Baxter, Sue Williams and Carolyn Caplan.  Susan brought home a 1st Place Low Net win in the Fourth Flight at the EWGA Championship Finals at the Lansdowne Golf Club in Leesburg, VA on October 15, 2016.  Team Hot in Cleveland  finished strong with an 8th place out of 50 teams at the 2016 Champions Cup which was held at the Westin Resort in Rancho Mirage, CA on November 11 and 12.  Other finalists who qualified for the Championship were Denise Andres, Gloria Merritt and Wendy Shick.  A great representation from Cleveland EWGA!

It is time to put away the golf clubs in Cleveland for another year. I am sure there are many of you that will be traveling to warmer climates to be able to get some golf in over the winter months.

The snow may be beginning to fall in Cleveland but our work on developing the schedule for 2017 has just begun. We are looking for our members to provide us feedback on how we are doing and what changes they would like to see in 2017.  We will be sending out a Survey for your input so please take the time to fill out and provide constructive ideas. I also encourage you to get involved in this organization; we need new volunteers and ideas. If you are interested in volunteering please contact me at dlmccreery@aol.com.

Our goal for 2017 is to expand our membership and build an even stronger EWGA organization.

Have a great Holiday Season!

Debbie

Members Volunteer with GCJGSF

A big thanks to EWGA Cleveland members Leigh Murray, Susan Curtis, Pat Blackmon, Eileen McCarthy, Lisa Bizjak, Deb Kandel, Cindy Darwal, Ann & Tom Shamess, and Karla Maschmeier who golfed with kids from the Greater Cleveland Junior Golf Scholarship Fund (aka GCJGSF) on July 30. After talking to the kids about their careers and how to achieve career goals, the volunteers worked on some golf skills like putting, chipping, etc. and then played 9 holes of golf with them.  You can learn more about GLJGSF here.

Connie Sims Scores a Hole in One

Congratulations goes out to Connie Sims of Pine Ridge. She recently had a hole-in-one at Briardale Greens Golf Course in Euclid. She aced the 16th hole, 90 yards with a 9-iron. Because of the hole layout, it wasn’t obvious it was in the hole until the group arrived to the green. No picture to document the feat, but we all believe Connie!

Debbie Kandel Plays a Round of Golf with Nancy Lopez

EWGA Cleveland member Debbie Kandel attended the 25th EWGA Celebration/Conference in Williamsburg, Va. in April. Because of a winning bid on an auction to benefit the EWGA Foundation, Deb got the chance of a lifetime - playing nine holes of golf with Nancy Lopez at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club!

CLEVELAND YEAR END

35 golfers gathered at Wicked Woods Golf Club in Newbury on Saturday, September 10. All made it safely back to the clubhouse – some a little wetter than others. All enjoyed a nice dinner and plenty of Chinese auction items. Liz Walton was the 50-50 winner. WEST SLOGS WAY TO COURSE CHALLENGE TITLE

Saturday was a wet day at Gleneagles Golf Club and the 15 golfers from the “West” courses (Briarwood, Sleep Hollow, Sweetbriar) grabbed the Course Challenge title. The course was hammered over the last week with lots of rain and it was cart-path only but no rain fell during play. The West team consisted of Julie Daymut/Susan Curtis (Briarwood), Susan Curtis/Ann Shamess (Sweetbriar), Lisa Bizjak/Leigh Murray (Briarwood), Debbie Kandel/Cindy Darwal (Sleepy Hollow), Kelli Chronister/Kristen Miller (Briarwood), Jo Dangel/Diane Kovachik (Briarwood), Linda Nauman/Anna Guttmann (Briarwood) and Eileen McCarthy/Pat Blackmon (Briarwood). A total of 33 golfers completed.

The format for play was two-person teams. The first 9 holes was best ball format in which both players played their own ball and used the lower score. The second 9 holes was a scramble. After play on the course, the golfers proceeded to a chipping contest as the putting green was diseased.

The West golfers pulled out the win by going 2-3-4 in the team score and 1-2 in the chipping contest portion of the Challenge. Eileen McCarthy and Kelli Chronister were first and second in the chipping contest. For the golf portion, the Bizjak/Murray and Chronister/Miller teams with 59 were the top scorers. Each of the members of the West team received a $17.50 gift card from Dick’s.

Other award winners were:
Clare Labaj and Wendy Shick (Pine Ridge) – low gross team with 66.
Kelli Chronister and Kristin Miller (Briarwood) – low net team with 59.
Eileen McCarthy (Briarwood) – got within 13 inches on her chip.

Skill shot winners:
Long putt – Cindy Darwal, Kristen Miller, sorry missing winner for Hole #5
Closest to Pin – Jo Dangel, Clare Labaj, Pat Blackmon, Diane Kovachik

NINE & WINE 6-11-16

6 EWGA Cleveland members played Hilliard Lakes on Saturday, June 11.  They braved the heat and survived to play another day.

After golf, the cool air conditioning at Rocky River Brewing Company was greatly appreciated. Cold beverages and a nice variety of appetizers were enjoyed at RRBC. We all stayed for a late lunch as well. An additional member joined the group at RRBC after golf.

Hot in Cleveland Match Play Team Heading on to the EWGA Cup Finals

Two Cleveland teams of 8 golfers traveled south to the Virtues course (Old Longaberger course) in Nashport, OH on September 17-18 to compete in the EWGA Cup (match play format). Although there were ominous weather forecasts for the entire weekend, the weather held up until the last hour and forced the last group off the course with most matches needing only 2-4 holes to finish. A total of 25 teams were competing for 10 slots to qualify for the Finals in Westin Mission Hills in California Nov. 11-12. Saturday the teams played two-person match play for 4 available points and Sunday was singles match play with 8 available points.

Hot in Cleveland team (Terry Baxter, Lisa Bizjak, Carolyn Caplan, Maria Kamenos, Leigh Murray, Donna Schreiber, Andy Shimek and Sue Williams finished with 9 points in a strong 2nd place. This is the first year this team has qualified to the Finals out of 6 attempts. Team got off to a great start by winning all 4 of the two-person matches on Saturday. Only two others teams in the field accomplished that feat. They were able to keep the momentum going by collecting 5 of the available 8 points on Sunday. Carolyn, Sue, Leigh and Lisa all collected 2 points for their team.

Cleveland Rocks the Socks team (Pat Blackmon, Donna Byrnes, Clare Labaj, Marlayna Jacinto, Eileen McCarthy, Allison Morrow,  Wendy Shick and Deb Solyan) finished in 20th place with 5 points. Marlayna and Eileen collected 1 ½ points for the team.

Chapter Championship 2016

Susan Curtis Brings Home the EWGA Championship Finals Trophy

EWGA Cleveland member, Susan Curtis, brought home a 1st Place Low Net win in the Fourth Flight at the EWGA Championship Finals at the Lansdowne Golf Club in Leesburg, Va on October 15, 2016!  This was Susan's fourth time competing in the Finals, and first win for her.  Her win allows her automatic entry into the 2017 Finals. The course was a Robert Trent Jones course, beautiful and challenging.  Susan commented that the front nine "lured you into complacency and then the back nine was one hole after another of challenging holes" and course management was a must.  In addition, the Saturday fog, and course difficulty cause long delays.

Denise Andres and Gloria Merritt also competed and finished with very respectable scores.  Gloria deserves an endurance award for an 8 hour round! Wendy Shick had qualified at the Semi-Finals to advance but was unable to because of a work committment.  Great job to all!

Cleveland Dominates Chapter Championship Semi-Finals 2016

The Quail Hollow-Devlin course was the host of the Upper Mideast District Championship on Saturday, August 27. Home cooking and being surrounded by familiar faces (with all the volunteers) did the trick as Cleveland dominated the 6 other chapters winners from Canada, Detroit and Ft. Wayne. The weather was another one of those hot-humid days as we have experienced on multiple occasions this year.

For the first time (based on Wendy’s recollection) Cleveland chapter qualified four golfers (Denise Andres, Susan Curtis, Gloria Merritt and Wendy Shick) to the EWGA Championship Finals. First gross and first net winners are eligible to travel to the Landsdowne Resort and Spa in Leesburg, VA on October 14-15.

Denise Andres and Gloria Merritt both shot the “best” rounds of the day finishing with 66 nets on the par 71 course. Those are two awesome rounds of golf under the conditions of the play.

The following are the placements by flight:

Championship flight – Wendy Shick 1st net – 68, Clare Labaj 3rd net – 77

1st flight – Leigh Murray 2nd net – 70

3rd flight – Gloria Merritt 1st gross – 98, Debbie Kandel 2nd gross – 99. Debbie actually played in place of Kim Behm who was forced to withdraw Friday because of an injury..

4th flight – Denise Andres 1st gross – 103, Susan Curtis 1st net - 75

Scramble team – 2nd place – 69 for Kim Bailey, Debbie Brenner, Nancy Cetina and Lori Maxwell.

Other golfers who participated included Lisa Bizjak, Cindy Darwal and Eileen McCarthy.

Another big winner of the day was Donna Byrnes winning the 50-50 pot – over $400 !!

A district event takes a lot of work from many volunteers. Debbie McCreery as the Chief Volunteer Coordinate and Susan Curtis was the Asst. Chief. Others that volunteered on either Friday or Saturday or both included: Cindy Darwal, Leigh Murray, Monica Wilson, Marilyn Weinke, Dina Stier, Laurie Schroeder, Donna Byrnes, Ann and Tom Shamess, Jane and George Spellacy, Gwen Virag, Pat Blackmon, Elsa Arriola, Kate Vezdos, Diane Ward and Sharon Sammon.

The Cleveland also put together one of the best Participant Gift Bags in quite a few years. Donations were obtained by/from Cindy Darwal (Giant Eagle and Winking Lizard), Karla Maschmeier, Sharon Sammon (Sherwin Williams), Deb Solyan (AFLAC) and WTF Golf by Lisa Bizjak, Ann Shamess and Andi Shimek.

Winners Advance to Quail Hollow Sectional

Saturday was a scorching day to be on the golf course as 36 golfers participated in the Chapter Championship at Ellsworth Meadows Golf Club. The rains over the two days leading up to Saturday had the course wet in a few spots, but things dried out in the afternoon as temperatures reached 92. Leigh Murray and Gloria Merritt posted the best rounds of the day (when comparing net scores) as both has 67 net. Five scramble teams were vying for the one spot in the Scramble competition, so that part of the competition was hotly contested. Lots of cold drinks and fun was had by all at the 19th hole. The first place gross, first place net winners and first place scramble team will advance to the Sectional Tournament at Quail Hollow – Devlin course on August 27. With our chapter hosting the event, we are expecting to advance a few players on to the Nationals that will be held in Virginia in September.
